This past week, the Governor of Puerto Rico signed into law a new bill that permits businesses to open after 5:00 pm on Sundays. The spirit of the law mandates that this move will ultimately make the economy better…. I think that not necessarily.
Those extra hours of stores open won’t mean that the consumer has more disposable income to spend, therefore, the sad reality is that those stores may experience losses based on this move. Although this law might create more jobs, those would be part-timers, without expectancy of being full-time, and won’t solve the unemployment problem in its entirety.
The problem in Puerto Rico goes deeper than this, it needs a complete overhaul of its economic process, and time is running out.
What do you think??
